What is a CT Scan?

CT stands for ‘computed tomography’. It’s a painless and non-invasive procedure.

A CT scanner is a ring-shaped device with X-ray tubes inside. The smallest abnormalities in your bones, lungs, and blood vessels can be detected by analysing a series of detailed images taken from various angles.

Why is a CT Scan used?

CT scans can be applied to a wide variety of body parts and conditions. Typically, a CT scan is used to

  • diagnose conditions
  • observe existing conditions
  • assess how treatment is working
  • plan further treatment

How does a CT scan work?

A CT scanner generates two-dimensional images from several different angles as it passes through your body, while an X-ray takes pictures from one perspective only. The CT scanner works by sending out multiple beams of X-rays at different angles.

What can a CT Scan detect?

A CT scan is great for viewing parts of the body which are difficult to access with other procedures. These include:

  • bones
  • internal organs
  • soft tissue
  • muscles
  • blood vessels

CT scans help detect and assess conditions and injuries including:

  • certain types of cancer and tumours
  • fractures
  • heart disease
  • blood clots
  • bowel disorders
  • kidney stones
  • brain injuries
  • spinal cord injuries
  • internal bleeding

What happens during my private CT Scan?

During the scan you’ll lie on a bed which moves through the scanner, while a ring rotates around a specific part of your body. You will be asked to breathe in or out, or to hold your breath, at different points in the scan. Your radiologist will interpret the results of the scans to assist in diagnosing your condition.

What are the advantages of a CT Scan?

CT scans remove the need for exploratory surgery, reducing patient stress and discomfort while saving valuable time. A CT scan can help detect the size, location and shape of a tumour, enabling the consultant to plan cancer treatment.

What is the difference between a CT scan and an MRI scan?

CT scans and MRI scans are both used to record images of the body. A CT uses X-rays whereas an MRI uses radio waves and magnets. Both CT and MRI are used to diagnose issues with body parts such as the brain, wrist, ankles and joints.

MRI is the best imaging modality for getting a detailed and in-depth look at the majority of the body areas. MRI is widely used as the best and preferred option for neuroimaging, musculoskeletal imaging, and the study of soft tissue and ligaments. tendons, joint spaces, spinal cord, disc spaces and many other body areas.

CT scanning is the preferred choice of investigation for certain areas such as the chest where MRI has its own limitations.

How long does it take to get results?

After your scan, a consultant radiologist will examine your images, and compile a report of their findings.

The consultant radiologist will then send your results to our team of doctors after your scan.

Your clinician will provide a post-scan consultation call to explain the results and next steps, usually within 3 days of your scan date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at 0115 837 2252 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A key benefit of booking with Nottingham Ear & Scan Clinic is that you do not need a GP referral to access our services. There is also no self-referral process. Instead, our medical team which consists of GMC registered doctors will contact you once you have made an appointment. Our doctors will ask you for all of the relevant information they need to compile a written referral on your behalf, which is then passed on to your chosen specialist diagnostic centre.

Once you have had your scan, the specialist diagnostic centre will send your results to our clinical team. They will review the report and contact you to discuss the findings and any next steps to consider.

After this, your report along with digital images will be available for download via our Patient Image Portal (PIP)

Our estimated timeframe for sharing your results is between 3-5 working days of your scan, but this varies and, in many cases, can be much quicker.

  • A private pre-scan consultation from one of our GMC registered doctors over the phone
  • A written referral by a GMC registered doctor, using the information from your consultation.
  • An CT scan at your chosen specalist diagnostic centre.
  • A written report on your scan by a Consultant Radiologist.
  • Access to copies of your scan images, which are downloadable via PIP, as required.
  • A post-scan consultation with one of our GMC registered doctors to discuss your results

Depending on the reason for your scan, it will take between 15 minutes and an hour. This time frame can vary, and your radiographer will let you know the estimated duration of your scan before the procedure starts.

To secure an appointment for a private GP consultation, a non-refundable deposit of £25 is required. Unlike many providers, we do not ask for full payment for your scan at the time of booking.

If, following the consultation, the GP determines that you do not meet the clinical referral criteria, no further charges will apply.

Where a referral is made and a scan appointment is confirmed, the outstanding balance (being the full fee for the recommended scan(s), less the deposit already paid) will become immediately due.

Once an appointment has been confirmed, cancellations are not permitted under any circumstances. If you cancel or fail to attend your appointment, the full fee will be forfeited and no refund will be issued.
