What is an MRI Scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which is a way of taking pictures inside the body using strong magnetic fields and radio waves. An MRI scan is a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure which captures high-quality images of inside the body. MRI scans are widely used to view the joints, muscles, nerves, bone marrow, blood vessels and other body structures.

During your scan, you’ll normally lie on a table that slides through a large tunnel containing the magnets that form the images. There’s also an option to use an upright or open scanner if you have mobility or anxiety issues.

It's suitable for every part of your body, including bones, soft tissues and the brain, and is one of the most advanced imaging techniques used to date.

Why Have an MRI Scan?

If you’re experiencing symptoms, or you have doubts about some aspect of your health, a scan could provide reassurance that all is well. If there’s a problem, early diagnosis could help ensure you get the best care possible.

At Nottingham Ear & Scan Clinic we offer full-body scans, which can provide a ‘big picture’ view of the health of your body. But if you have any pain, identifiable symptoms, or another reason to worry about a specific condition, a focused scan of a particular body part may be all that’s needed.

What types of MRI scans are there?

MRI scans have a wide range of uses and applications. Along with general body imaging, we offer some specialist scans, including prostate multi parametric (MPM) for detailed prostate imaging, Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) for blood vessel imaging, and cardiac MRIs for scanning the heart.

There are also different types of scanners. The most common type is cylindrical shaped, also known as closed-bore. Claustrophobic patients or those with reduced mobility might opt for an open or upright scanner. MRI machines also differ in magnet strength (1.5T or 3T). In most cases, 1.5T is a suitable option.

How is an MRI scan performed?

Your scan will be carried out by a radiographer, a highly trained imaging specialist. They will explain the process to you beforehand and remain in contact with you throughout the procedure using a two-way communication system.

The scanner makes loud tapping or thumping sounds while images are being taken, but you will be offered headphones and the option to listen to music to help you relax. You will need to remain very still while lying on the scanning bed, which moves in and out of the scanner. Depending on the area being examined, a scan typically lasts between 15 and 90 minutes.

In some cases, a contrast agent is required to enhance the clarity of the images. This is usually administered intravenously (IV) and will be explained to you in advance.

How do I prepare for an MRI scan?

Preparation for an MRI scan is usually straightforward. We will inform you in advance if any specific instructions apply, such as fasting before your appointment. You may also be asked to complete a medical questionnaire and consent form on the day.

Because the scanner uses powerful magnets, it is important that you remove all metallic objects before entering the scanning room. This includes watches, jewellery, belts, glasses, dentures, and hearing aids. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing without metal fastenings, although you may be asked to change into a medical gown.

MRI scans are safe and well-tolerated by most patients, and our team will support you at every stage to ensure you feel comfortable and reassured.

How long does it take to get results?

After your scan, a consultant radiologist will examine your images, and compile a report of their findings.

The consultant radiologist will then send your results to our team of doctors after your scan.

Your clinician will provide a post-scan consultation call to explain the results and next steps, usually within 3 days of your scan date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at 0115 837 2252 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A key benefit of booking with Nottingham Ear & Scan Clinic is that you do not need a GP referral to access our services. There is also no self-referral process. Instead, our medical team which consists of GMC registered doctors will contact you once you have made an appointment. Our doctors will ask you for all of the relevant information they need to compile a written referral on your behalf, which is then passed on to your chosen specialist diagnostic centre.

Once you have had your scan, the specialist diagnostic centre will send your results to our clinical team. They will review the report and contact you to discuss the findings and any next steps to consider.

After this, your report along with digital images will be available for download via our Patient Image Portal (PIP)

Our estimated timeframe for sharing your results is between 3-5 working days of your scan, but this varies and, in many cases, can be much quicker.

  • A private pre-scan consultation from one of our GMC registered doctors over the phone
  • A written referral by a GMC registered doctor, using the information from your consultation.
  • An MRI scan at your chosen specialist diagnostic centre.
  • A written report on your scan by a Consultant Radiologist.
  • Access to copies of your scan images, which are downloadable via PIP, as required.
  • A post-scan consultation with one of our GMC registered doctors to discuss your results

A scan on a single body part typically takes between 10–30 minutes. Full-body scans, additional body parts, or more complex scans can last up to 90 minutes. This time frame can vary, and your radiographer will let you know the estimated duration of your scan before the procedure starts.

To secure an appointment for a private GP consultation, a non-refundable deposit of £25 is required. Unlike many providers, we do not ask for full payment for your scan at the time of booking.

If, following the consultation, the GP determines that you do not meet the clinical referral criteria, no further charges will apply.

Where a referral is made and a scan appointment is confirmed, the outstanding balance (being the full fee for the recommended scan(s), less the deposit already paid) will become immediately due.

Once an appointment has been confirmed, cancellations are not permitted under any circumstances. If you cancel or fail to attend your appointment, the full fee will be forfeited and no refund will be issued.
