An ear infection can persist for several months if not properly diagnosed and treated.
An ear swab involves collecting a sample from the infected area of the ear using a sterile medical cotton bud. This sample is then sent to a specialist laboratory for detailed analysis.
Once the results are returned to us, our GMC-registered doctors review them and prescribe the appropriate antibiotics, specifically tailored to treat your infection — ensuring faster, more effective relief.
This service also eliminates the need to see your GP, which can be difficult given the ongoing pressures on primary care.
With us, you’ll receive timely, expert care without the wait, all in a comfortable and professional environment.
Best of all, there is no additional charge for this service — it's included as part of your treatment.
Our goal is to make your recovery as smooth, accurate, and stress-free as possible.
An ear infection — also known as otitis externa (outer ear infection) or otitis media (middle ear infection) — can cause significant discomfort, pain, and irritation.
These infections may affect:
Certain environments and activities can increase your risk of developing an ear infection. Ask yourself:
If you answered yes to any of the above, you may have created an ideal environment for bacteria — and in some cases, fungi — to thrive in the ear.
There are several potential causes of ear infections, including:
Bacteria
Various bacteria can infect the ear canal, with the most common being Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. These bacteria typically affect the outer ear but can also reach the middle ear, often following a common cold or upper respiratory infection.
Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
This is a common skin condition characterised by irritation and inflammation of naturally oily areas of the skin, including the ear canal. It can contribute to ear discomfort and increase the risk of infection.
Fungus
Ear fungal infections occur when fungi, such as Candida or Aspergillus species, overgrow in the ear canal. These infections are more likely to develop in warm, moist environments and can be triggered by prolonged use of antibiotics or antibacterial ear drops, which disrupt the natural balance of microorganisms.
If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, there is a high likelihood that you may be suffering from an ear infection:
These symptoms may indicate otitis externa (outer ear infection), otitis media (middle ear infection), or a fungal ear infection.
Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to guide effective treatment.
If you are experiencing any of the above, we recommend booking a consultation.
During your appointment, one of our GMC-registered doctors will carry out a thorough clinical assessment, including an aural swab to collect a sample from the ear canal. This sample will be sent to a specialist microbiology laboratory for analysis to identify the underlying cause of the infection — whether bacterial or fungal.
Based on the laboratory findings, a targeted course of antibiotics or antifungal treatment will be prescribed to ensure effective resolution of the infection. You will also be booked in for a follow-up review to assess your response to treatment and confirm that the infection has fully cleared.
